Srinagar: The tendency to disrupt the question hour during the proceedings of parliament and the state assemblies needed to be checked, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said Tuesday.

Addressing reporters here at the end of the two-day conference of presiding officers' of parliament and the assemblies here, she said the conference decided to constitute a committee of presiding officers to look into the problem of question hour being disrupted.

Asked why translation of parliamentary business into Kashmiri is not being undertaken despite Kashmiri being in the eighth schedule of the constitution, Meira Kumar said that it was due to non-availability of qualified Kashmiri interpreters.

She assured the process would be started as soon as suitable staff becomes available.

Detailing the conference's proceedings, she said the deliberations related to significance of the committee system in parliament and the assemblies and the need to strengthen it.

She said the conference had passed a resolution that "all legislatures in India may adopt a uniform committees system for securing accountability of the executive to the legislatures through in-depth scrutiny of the budget and monitoring and review of he performance of the ministries and departments of the government".

Meira Kumar thanked the state legislature and government for extending generous hospitality to host the presiding officers' conference after a gap of 23 years.
