Chiranjeevi snubs Advani Kushal Jeena August 29, 2008
New Delhi, Telugu actor-turned politician Chranjeevi, who recently made his maiden entry into politics has snubbed BJP Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani refuting BJP's claim that the actor had met Advani to seek his blessings.

The super star of Telugu film industry was in the national capital few days before he launched his party at a massive rally in temple town of Tirupati, to meet some of his friends. The BJP vice president M Venkiah Naidu, who is considered very close to Advani somehow managed to get Chiranjeevi's meeting with Advani before launching his party.

After the meeting the actor left for Hyderabad. Naidu played a deliberate trick and told media persons that Chiranjeevi had come to meet Advani to seek his blessing before taking plunge into politics of Andhra Pradesh. The film star also came to know this through media reports and immediately issued a clarification that he had not met Advani to seek his blessings. He said it Naidu who was deseparately pressing him to meet the BJP leader. He also rejected the BJP's proposal to have an alliance with his newly floated party Praja Rajyam.

Chiranjeevi's clarification came as a shock to Advani, who felt insulted and immediately scolded Naidu directing him to do arrange any such meeting in future. Barring Naidu no other leader from the BJP belonging to Andhra Pradesh was keen to have an electoral understanding with the new outfit.

Meanwhile, mega turnout of ten lakh people, who gathered at Chiranjeevi's maiden political meeting in Tirupati, has sent rumblings across political circles. The political parties particularly ruling Congress and the opposition Telugu Desam Party is currently debating whether or not he would be able to do what N T Rama Rao did over two decades back and whether he would enter into an alliance with any of the party or go alone.

"Chiranjeevi ultimately will be a good force in state politics. He is a megastar, he has a huge fan following. We have observed it happening when NTR came into politics,'' said K Chandrasekhar Rao, President of Telengana Rastra Samiti, a regional outfit.

However, two major parties in the state Congress and TDP are downplaying the potential of mega star, as they fear that he could make dents within their ranks. The entry of Chiranjeevi into politics cannot be linked to the NTR, as two are quite different situation. When NTR joined politics there was a huge vacuum of a credible opposition party in the southern state and Congress was the only party ruling AP. NTR immediately filled that gap and became chief minister within six months of forming his party.

The political situation now is different, as there are two big political forces that have been active in the state. TDP, which was formed by the NTR, has ruled the state for a decade and TRS, which is a force to reckon with in the Telengana region forced the Congress to go for alliance politics.

The opposition ranks in the state have so strengthened in the post-NTR period that one time unchallenged Congress had to look for electoral partners. Chiranjeevi will have make space for his party within the available slot in the opposition as well as ruling formations.
