Mamata endorses police's claim on Tehatta firing November 17, 2012
Kolkata, Nov 17 West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Friday endorsed the police's claim that they opened fire at a mob in Tehatta Nov 14 in self-defence.

"Can anyone be allowed to enter someone's home and attack their wife and child? If you were there, what would you have done?" Banerjee said on police's claim that they opened fire after one of their officers and his family were attacked.

Speaking at a Kolkata Police function here, the chief minister termed the incident as "not minor" and said her government would do everything to find out the truth.

"What occurred there was not a minor incident. The government will have to do what it must do," she said.

Sniffing a "political conspiracy" behind the incident, she also warned political rivals not to indulge in the politics of violence.

"What has happened has happened but what must be looked at is why did it happen? Who are behind this and which political colour is there in the incident?"

If you want to fight politically and declare a war against me, I'm ready. But I'm the last person to tolerate a riot. Do not indulge in politics of violence," she said.

One man was killed, allegedly in police firing, and nine people were injured in Tehatta in Nadia district Wednesday following a clash between a mob and police.
