New Delhi, Mar 2 Expressing shock at the kidnapping, gang-rape and killing of three minor sisters in Maharashtra last month, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde Friday said the state police were making every effort to nab the perpetrators while the BJP demanded a CBI inquiry in the case.

"I am deeply shocked that three minor girls from same family were brutally murdered after being sexually abused and their bodies thrown into a well in a village in Maharashtra's Bhandara district," Shinde told the Rajya Sabha, making a statement on the incident.

He said the girls went missing on Feb 14 and their bodies were found three days later.

"The in-charge of the police station was suspended for not seriously taking the report of missing girls. Several teams have been formed to pursue different lines of investigation," he said.

Shinde said efforts were on to nab the perpetrators.

The three sisters, aged between 11 and six, went missing Feb 14, Valentine's Day, after attending school. Two days later, their brutalised bodies were found in a well.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry as perpetrators are still untraced and on the run.

"There is no law and order in Maharashtra and in last one month more than 10 rape cases were reported. I appeal to the home minister that central government should not wait for state government's recommendation for CBI inquiry," said BJP leader Prakash Javadekar.

BJP leader Smriti Irani said the state government has not taken the matter seriously and convicts are still at large.

"The incident happened on Feb 14 and what state government did was suspending the in-charge of police station. The central government should give a directive to Maharashtra government to take stringent action against the perpetrators," she said.

Trinamool Congress MP K.D. Singh called for an exceptional rule to ensure a central body to investigate heinous crimes like rape.

"I know law and order is a state issue but there should be provisions to ensure that such cases are handled on priority basis," said Singh.
