Chandigarh: Haryana's main opposition party, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) Tuesday criticised the Congress' move to wrap up the opening assembly session in one day, terming it "unprecedented" and the "murder of democracy".

"The undue hurry in which Congress wants to complete the constitutional requirements proved that it did not enjoy confidence in the assembly. It is happening for the first time in political history that opening session has been convened at 9.30 a.m. as normally the first day starts at 2 p.m.," INLD general secretary Ajay Chautala said here Tuesday.

He said on one hand, the Congress is claiming a majority but it is running away from the debate.

"People of Haryana have given clear mandate against Congress as it was defeated in 50 of the 90 assembly segments," he contended.

Chautala said that in the opening session, there are many important businesses like the administration of the oath of office to the newly elected legislators, election of the speaker, obituary references, the governor's address, and vote of confidence - which now would be done in a single day.

"All the legislators have every right to speak on the governor's address, which is the policy statement of the government, but they would not get opportunity to debate," he said.

In the Oct 13 elections to the 90-member assembly, the Congress won 40 seats while the INLD managed 31 seats. As seven Independents elected to the assembly pledged their support to the Congress, the party was assured of majority in the house and was invited to form the government.
