"I saw it coming" February 2, 2010
Though, the world has collapsed around him, but he hasn’t let go of his dignity. As TV channels struggle to get juicy bits about why engaement of Sohrab Mirza and India's tennis sensation Sania Mirza was called off with , Sohrab, who’s currently doing his MBA in the UK, shares his grief in an exclusive chat.

‘ It didn’t come out of the blue!’

The man with an attractive baritone voice says that “differences between us cropped up right from the word go. After the engagement, we realised that we were completely incompatible although we had known each other for around six years and our families have been friends for three generations. The broken engagement didn’t come out of the blue, I saw it coming!”

‘ It hurts!’

His manner is perfectly poised, but he can’t hide the pain in his voice. On the reports, which allude that Sania broke the engagement, he says, “It was a mutual decision to get engaged and we mutually decided to part ways even though it hurts. But, you have to move on.”

‘To me she was a simple girl’

Sohrab remains unfazed in the face of certain reports claiming that ‘he couldn’t adjust to Sania’s celebrity status.’ With calm in his voice, he says, “She was a celebrity for the world, but for me she was a simple girl. She has worked so hard to achieve what she has and I’m proud of her achievements. But, I also run a decent business, so there was no competition going on between us.” And what about the news of her so-called link-ups with Shahid Kapur and Mahesh Bhupathi? Without any hesitation he replies, “I don’t believe in gossip. And I wouldn’t have anybody casting a slur on a lady’s reputation.”

‘ I’ll not avert my eyes when we meet’

They may not walk down the aisle together, but Sohrab makes it clear that “I’m not going to avert my eyes and pretend ignorance when I meet Sania next. I will walk up to her and wish her. You have to be mature and grown up about such things in life.” Being a gentel man, he has only benign thoughts for his ex fiancée, but what is that one quality that he will now seek in his future wife? There’s a catch in his voice as he says, “At this juncture I’m not even ready to think about such things. Whatever has to happen, will happen!”
