Singur talks inconclusive, Mamata threatens indefinite agitation

Kolkata, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee threatened to launch an indefinite agitation from Aug 24 after the much-awaited talks between West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Leader of Opposition Partha Chattopadhyay over the Singur land row remained inconclusive Wednesday.
"The entire discussion was full of negativity and the state government didn't show any good gesture to resolve the Singur standoff," Banerjee told a press conference here after getting the updates from two of her party representatives who attended the meeting.
She said: "I don't know why the state government is so averse to disclose the agreement with the Tata Motors.
"We'll not indulge in any violence. Our movement will go on in a political and peaceful manner. But this is for sure, our agitation will continue till the 400 acres is returned to the farmers," Banerjee said.
A total of 997.11 acres were acquired for the Tata Motors' Nano project by the Left Front government, triggering violent protests in June 2006.
The project has been mired in controversy as farmers' groups and the Trinamool Congress have alleged that the state government "forcibly acquired" their farmlands.
"We have discussed all issues with the state government and asked them to give back 400 acres to the farmers," Chattopadhyay told reporters after attending the meeting.
"Our demand is for 400 acres of land that was forcibly acquired by the state government for developing ancillary industries within the premises of the Tata Motors factory. We have some commitments to the people of Singur and we are answerable to them," he said.
Industry Minister Nirupam Sen, industry department principal secretary Sabyasachi Sen and Trinamool Congress-led anti-land acquisition front Krishi Jami Jiban Jibika Raksha Committee leader Purnendu Basu also attended the meeting, which lasted for two hours.
The Tata Motors factory is set to roll out the four-seater Nano with a price tag of Rs.100,000 ($2,500), said to the cheapest car in the world.
