SP to back Sonia's candidate for Prime Minister Kushal Jeena September 6, 2008
New Delhi, Declaring its unstinted support to the Congress, the
Samajwadi Party on Friday said it would support the Prime Ministerial
candidate of Sonia Gandhi in the next general elections. The party
also announced that unlike Left parties it would not issue ultimatum
to the UPA government.

SP general secretary Amar Singh said his party would extend its full
support to the Prime Ministerial candidate backed by the Congress
President Sonia Gandhi. " We are not opposed to Rahul Gandhi as next
Prime Minister. We are also not against Manmohan Singh being
re-nominated for the highest executive office of the country," Singh
said in meet the press program organized here at the Press Club of
India.

On latest revelation over the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal, the SP
leader said his party has full faith in the Prime Minister and would
not believe on any other outsider. He however, refused to divulge the
details of the meeting of the Congress-SP coordination committee held
this morning.

Singh denied reports that he has been pushing through the interests of
his industrialist friend Anil Ambani arguing that many political
parties including Left endorsed his stand on windfall tax on oil and
gas marketing companies. On his participation in the government the
high profile SP leader said his party did not participate in the
government this time because only four months have left for the Lok
Sabha elections.

"If we join the government next time I would not like to accept two
portfolios like Information Technology and Information and
Broadcasting as in that case I would be accused of favouring Ambani
and Amitabh Bachchan.
