Decline in inflation hits opposition poll plank Kushal Jeena October 25, 2008
New Delhi, What Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had recently said that inflation will come down significantly in the next two months became true with the inflation figure released on Thursday showing a decline from 12.67 per cent to 11.04 per cent hitting major poll plank of the BJP and the Left parties.

With inflation coming every successive weeks from record a high of 12.67 per cent in the month of September to 11.04 per cent for the week ended 0ct 11, 2008.

The anxiety and uneasiness in the opposition camp is also increasingly being felt with every drop in price index, a senior minister of the ruling United Progressive Alliance government told this correspondent in an informal chat in the parliament House.

As the issue of price hike gets eclipsed and the BJP's hopes to exploit the issue during the assembly election becomes bleak and don't augur well for the party that is banking upon to cash in on the steep rise in the prices essential commodities during the upcoming assembly elections in the six states.

It's been seen as ``bolt from the blue'' as the price hike issue appears to be slipping out from their hand and the ruling UPA government is set to launch election campaign in lucid way.

Meanwhile, the petroleum and natural gas minister Murli Deora has said the prices of petrol and diesel would be reduced within a week. The government is expected to cut down the fuel prices hopefully before the festival of light. There are indications that reduce rate could be between Rs 6 on petrol and Rs 4 on diesel.

The government has decided to cut down the prices of petrol and diesel in view of a significant decline in the prices of global crude oil, which have significantly dropped from a record high of $147 to $ 61.47 currently.

The decision to cut fuel prices has come as a serious setback to the BJP, which hopes to come back to power on issue of price rise that is fast dwindling and the party leaders are in the state of despondency.
