Responding to the Report of the 6th Pay Commission, which is approved by the Government today, Dr. L K Malhotra, President, PHD Chamber said that the long awaited report will bring cheers to the government employee and defence personnel. "At the same time, the focus should be on enhancing the efficiency of the government working and timely implementation of the projects in time", he added.

In a statement issued today, the PHD Chamber President said that the decision of the Government to stagger disbursement of arrears in two components to be given in 2008 and in 2009 will considerably help in holding the price line. The financial implication of the implementation of the Report is worked out upwards of Rs.22,000 crore for 2008-09. A one time infusion of such a large funds would have created price spiral at a time, the inflation has peaked over 12 percent.

Dr. Malhotra also mentioned that the functioning of the central government and its allied departments should be considerably toned up particularly at the grassroots level. The time and cost overruns involved in the implementation of the projects are very high and that can be reduced only through high degree of efficiency of the Government departments. The governmental delivery systems should be strengthened to reach out to the common man for his all-round development.
