UAE joins UN body for preserving cultural property May 12, 2008
Abu Dhabi, May 12: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has agreed to join the United Nation's intergovernmental organisation dedicated to the conservation of cultural heritage, WAM news agency reported on Monday.

The decision to join the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) was taken during a regular meeting of the ministerial commission for services held here on Sunday under the chairmanship of Presidential Affairs Minister Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

ICCRIM is an intergovernmental organisation established in Rome in 1959 by Unesco. It occupies a unique position in being the only institution with a worldwide mandate to promote the conservation of both movable and immovable heritage in all its forms.

It currently comprises over 100 member states, as well as 103 associate members from among the world's leading conservation institutions.

ICCROM aims at improving the quality of conservation as well as raising people's awareness of it in all walks of life, schoolchildren and politicians alike. It aspires, through conservation, to make cultural heritage benefit humanity.

Besides deciding to join the ICCRIM, the ministerial commission also approved membership of the UAE's National Transport Authority to the Arab Seaports Federation.

It also reviewed the annual report of the state audit institution.
