New Delhi, The Congress, which has on Monday begun first round of talks with the Samajwadi Party for seat-sharing in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the next year general elections, has rejected the old formula of sitting-getting as suggested by the SP.
The ruling party at the center said it has turned down the time-tested formula on the ground that after the delimitation, the composition of various constituencies have totally changed. Congress general secretary and incharge of Uttar Pradesh Digivjay Singh conveyed this to his SP counterpart Amar Singh before the meeting started on Monday.
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi also attended the meeting and besides him and Singh UPCC chief Rita Bahuguna also participated in the meeting. From SP side Amar Singh and Ram Gopal Yadav were present in the meeting.
The Congress leaders reportedly told the SP leaders that there are many seats including Bijnor, Pratapgarh, Muradabad and Shahjahanpur where two parties need to engage in the dialogue freshly. The SP leaders have not yet responded to the Congress proposal saying the SP currently holds most of such seats.
The Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also suggested during the course of discussion that winnability should be the lone criteria for the selection of seats and candidates by both the parties. Earlier Congressmen in the country's most populated and politically sensitive state had expressed apprehension that the agreement with SP would undermine the image of the Congress.
Rahul had in a recent party meeting in Allahabad assured the state party leaders that he would ensure that the prestige of the party is by no way compromised or undermined while entering into a seat-sharing arrangement with the SP.
In the post delimitation, the Congress says there are many parliamentary seats in UP, which in the present Lok Sabha are held by SP, but their composition in the changed situation suits more to Congress than the the SP. Similarly, party argued that there are few seats which were held by the Congress now favour SP.
