New Delhi, The Congress president Sonia Gandhi is likely to intervene and resolve ongoing rift that seems widening between Congress and Samajwadi Party with their leaders failing to reach a common understanding on seat-sharing for the next Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh.
The Congress leaders from the state as well as party MPs from UP are mounting pressure on the party high command to intervene and help resolve the crisis. Six of the party MPs reportedly met with her in this connection early this week and explained the current stage of talks. The Congress president has also sought an explanation from Digvijay Singh, party general secretary and in charge of UP. He is also one of the key members of the committee that had been set up to hold dialogue with SP.
The seat-sharing negotiations between the two allies came to a halt when three days back Singh wrote a letter to his SP counterpart informing him that his party is not willing to fight less than two dozens of parliamentary seats. The SP had offered 12 seats to the Congress and after persuasion agrees to give two more seats. In the 14th Lok Sabha the ruling party has strength of 10 MPs from India's most populated state.
While staking claim on at least 24 seats the negotiators from Congress side argued that in the post-delimitation scenario political equations in more than 24 parliamentary constituencies have completely changed and in the present situation chances of Congress winning these seats have brightened provided SP supports its candidates in these Lok Segments.
The SP has refused to buy this argument and said of the 14 seats Congress is demanding in UP, 10 are currently held by SP MPs. With the talks between the two parties hitting a roadblock, SP general secretary Amar Singh has launched a scathing attack on Congress describing home minister Shivraj Patil as most incompetent minister.
The differences between them also have widened after four the SP legislators in Madhya Pradesh switched over to Congress. The SP has accused state Congress president Suresh Pachouri of engineering split in the party. Besides, Congress has refused to enter into any electoral arrangement with SP in MP, where pro-OBC party claims to have a noticeable influence.
