BJP clears 53 candidates for Delhi assembly polls November 2, 2008
New Delhi, The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) late Saturday released its first list of 53 candidates for the Delhi assembly polls, which it will contest in alliance with the Akali Dal.

The list, which includes 19 sitting legislators, was cleared at a meeting of the Central Election Committee chaired by party president Rajnath Singh.

The BJP's chief ministerial candidate V.K. Malhotra will contest from the Greater Kailash constituency.

Delhi party unit chief Harshvardhan and veteran leader Vijay Jolly will contest from the Krishna Nagar and New Delhi constituencies respectively.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit is tipped to be the Congress candidate from New Delhi constituency.

The first list also includes the names of two women.

The list of the candidates for 13 seats will be released later, while the Akali Dal will from four constituencies - Shahdra, Adarsh Nagar, Rajauri Garden and Jungpura.

Elections to the 70-member assembly will be held Nov 29.
