BJP to have poll pact with AGP in Assam Kushal Jeena September 6, 2008
New Delhi, The central leadership of the BJP has given green
signal to its state unit to enter into an electoral alliance with the
AGP in Assam with party's Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani
planning a whirlwind visit to the flood-affected areas of the
politically significant north-eastern state.
The decision for having a pact with the regional heavyweight was taken
at a meeting of the BJP's core committee, which is holding regular
meetings to select candidates for the forthcoming general elections.
On Thursday committee discussed the political scenario in Assam,
identifying the illegal influx problem as the main poll plank in the
State. The meeting was presided over by BJP national president Rajnath
Singh. Those who attended the meeting included L.K.Advani, Jaswant
Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Anant Kumar and Arun Jeitley.
In the two-hour long meeting, senior party leaders took stock of the
prevailing political and the flood situation in the State. BJP's state
party leaders appraised the Central leadership about the political
scenario and the Party's strategy to fight the forthcoming Lok Sabha
polls.
The BJP said it would prefer to have AGP on board as member of the
NDA. However, the final decision is theirs. "We are ready for an
alliance as well as a seat sharing pact," said Raman Deka, president
of Assam BJP.
M Venkahiah Naidu, who heads the Party's Election Management
Committee, said the leadership was of the view that there should be no
split in the anti-Congress votes. He said BJP welcomed the AGP's
proposal to face the election together.
"The situation in Assam is favourable for BJP and the NDA alliance
with a non-performing Congress government in place. We can hope to win
a good number of seats contributing to the NDA kitty," he said.
The BJP president Rajnath Singh has authorized senior party leader
Jaswant Singh and Sushma Swaraj to hold seat sharing talk with AGP,
which has also constituted a six-member committee.
