Dhoni, Tendulkar in ICC world ODI teamSeptember 11, 2008
Dubai, India's one-day and Twenty20 captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and veteran Sachin Tendulkar figure in the International Cricket Council's (ICC) world ODI team for 2008.
The team was chosen by a specially appointed selection panel headed by West Indian batting legend Clive Lloyd and was announced at the ICC's annual awards gala here Wednesday night.
The team, in batting order, is: Herschelle Gibbs (South Africa), Sachin Tendulkar (India), Ricky Ponting (Australia, captain), Younis Khan (Pakistan), Andrew Symonds (Australia), Mahendra Singh Dhoni (India, wicketkeeper), Farveez Maharoof (Sri Lanka), Daniel Vettori (New Zealand), Brett Lee (Australia), Mitchell Johnson (Australia) and Nathan Bracken (Australia).
Pakistan's Salman Butt was named the 12th man.
"It is a great honour to be named captain of the World ODI Team," Ponting said.
Six countries are represented in the 12-man line-up. Two players - Ponting and Tendulkar - also appeared in the world ODI team in 2007.
The Australian captain appeared in the ODI team in 2006 as well.
Apart from Lloyd, other members of the panel comprised former Australia captain Greg Chappell, recently retired South Africa all-rounder Shaun Pollock, former Sri Lanka opener Sidath Wettimuny and former Bangladesh batsman Athar Ali Khan.
