Hyderabad: Police today questioned Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik in Hyderabad in connection with a complaint filed by Ayesha Siddiqui, the woman who claims to be his wife.
Eight police officers led by Ravindra Reddy, ACP, Hyderabad City Police, questioned Shoaib at tennis star Sania Mirza's house.
Shoaib and Sania are scheduled to marry in the city next week.
The sections under which the FIR was filed against Shoaib relate to cheating, criminal intimidation and dowry harassment. Since the sections are non-bailable, the cricketer could even be arrested and interrogated in custody.
The FIR was filed at the city's Banjara Hills police station on Sunday after a complaint by the Siddiquis.
Ayesha's statement
The police also recorded Ayesha's statement at her home. The team was led by Senior Inspector Ramgopal Reddy.
'Shoaib can't leave country'
There was more trouble for Shoaib. According to sources in the police, a letter has been sent to the immigration department to prevent Shoaib from leaving the country.
Shoaib claims he was cheated
Shoaib had earlier admitted to marrying Ayesha but termed the nikah as invalid, saying he was cheated. He alleged that Ayesha was not the woman whose photographs he was shown before the wedding.
Both Sania and Shoaib have so far said their wedding would go ahead as scheduled.
