Bangalore, 25th March, 2008: GIREM, India’s Largest Real Estate & Urban Planning Leadership Summit, today announced that the renowned economist, Professor Jagdish Bhagwati, who is the foremost proponent of free trade today and is widely regarded as the intellectual pioneer of India’s reforms will address a complete gathering of leaders in the realty industry on opportunities and challenges in the Global Economic Landscape, opportunities and challenges in building new urban India.

GIREM, a global platform, will be held from 14–16 May, 2008, at Goa. The event will bring together all stakeholders of Real Estate and Urban Planning at the very scenic beach front of Holiday Inn, Goa. The theme for the inaugural year is “where opportunities meet”.

Prof. Jagdish Bhagwati said, “India’s rapid growth for nearly fifteen years, after its embrace of the reforms which some of us had argued for as early as the 1960s, has been marked by an increased role for the private sector. With urban growth a reality, the new economics, freed from the heavy hand of ideology, and using the private sector pragmatically and in a fulsome fashion, needs to be extended to urban development as well. Urban planning needs to be marked by an increased role for the real estate industry, in the spirit of the reforms that have transformed India and finally begun to reduce poverty substantially. Realty industry in India is maturing and as we attain a greater economic stature globally, Urban Planning that integrates the firsthand experience and expertise of the expanding real estate industry with the viewpoints of other stakeholders is one of the new challenges as India forges ahead. GIREM is an important Summit that brings together the different stakeholders to provide a clear roadmap where the role of the Indian real estate industry in this important task ahead can be defined.”

Prof. Jagdish Bhagwati, is professor of Economics and Law at Columbia University and a Senior Fellow in International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations. He is widely regarded as the world’s leading scholar and policy commentator on international trade. He has also been Economic Policy Adviser to Arthur Dunkel, Director General of GATT (1991-93), Special Adviser to the UN on Globalization, and External Adviser to the WTO. He has served on the Expert Group appointed by the Director General of the WTO on the Future of the WTO and the Advisory Committee to Secretary General Kofi Annan on the NEPAD process in Africa, and was also a member of the Eminent Persons Group under the chairmanship of President Fernando Henrique Cardoso on the future of UNCTAD. Five volumes of his scientific writings and two of his public policy essays have been published by MIT press. The recipient of six festschrifts in his honor, he has also received several prestigious prizes and honorary degrees, including the highest awards from the governments of India (Padma Vibhushan) and Japan (Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star). Professor Bhagwati's latest book ‘In Defense of Globalization’ was published by Oxford University Press in 2004 to worldwide acclaim and has just been reissued in a new edition with an Afterword.
