Police register Scarlett death a case of murderMarch 9, 2008
The Goa Police have formally registered a case of murder against unidentified persons in the mysterious death of British tourist Scarlett Keeling.
The case has been registered on the basis of a fresh complaint, filed by Scarlett's mother on Saturday night.
There still seems to be no clarity as to how 15-year-old Scarlett actually died.
The second autopsy that was conducted on Saturday referred that the case should be investigated as a homicide. The teenager's body had washed up ashore on a Goa beach, covered with wounds.
The family had insisted the case be probed, in order to examine any angles of murder, while the state police had maintained that it was a death by drowning.
Scarlett's body has been found on Goa's Anjuna beach three weeks ago.
A second autopsy was ordered after Scarlett's mother Fiona had alleged a cover-up by the police. She had insisted her daughter had been raped and murdered.
''We hope that the 2nd post mortem will be more truthful. The police not telling us anything,'' said Fiona Mckeown, victim's mother.
Goa Police had all along maintained the stand that they were exploring all angles to the case.
''The investigating officer still has to file his report. We are considering all angles,'' said Bosco George, SP, North Goa.
But unlike the first autopsy, which was conclusive, the second only said that death due to drowning couldn't be ruled out.
The recent report also shows more than 20 wounds on Scarlett's body, whereas the first autopsy had recorded only five.
The recent report also states that whether Scarlett had been raped or not can be decided only after a referral analysis.
