'Robin Hood' is a charmless bore June 12, 2010

Cast: Russel Crowe, Cate Blanchett

Director: Ridley Scott

Director Ridley Scott's Robin Hood is the complicated and plodding back-story of one of our favorite legendary heroes.

Scott takes us on a long and boring history lesson through 12th century England to show us how deadly archer Robin Longstride went from a soldier in the army of King Richard the Lionheart, to become the celebrated outlaw who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor.

Russel Crowe stars as the mumbling, grim-faced hero who barely cracks a smile. His love interest here is Cate Blanchett, who plays Lady Marion, the widow of an English knight killed by a treacherous English officer.

The film is tidily shot and features some excellent battle scenes which have a 'real' feel to them, unlike the CGI-created war scenes we've become so used to seeing in modern epic films.

What's missing in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood is a sense of swashbuckling fun. Crowe's Robin Hood shoots many arrows, and gets himself down and dirty fighting the opposite side. But it's hard to muster up much excitement when the characters themselves act like they're performing a chore.

I'm going with two out of five for Ridley Scott's Robin Hood. They've turned a much-loved figure from popular folklore into a charmless bore. Shame!
