Mumbai, The parents of dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni have advised their son to forget about the cash from his bumper Indian Premier League (IPL) contract and rather pay more attention on cricket.
The Chennai franchise of the money-spinning Twenty20 tournament lavished a $1.5 million per year contract on Dhoni at a player auction in Mumbai yesterday. Dhoni topped the bidding at the showy auction, which also saw Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds take up as the second most expensive pick at $1.35 million.
Dhoni’s father Pan Singh said that although, there is no doubt that it is a matter of great pride, but afar from monetary aspect, it is important that Dhoni lives up to the expectations of his fans, supporters and the country.
The contracts will be in operation for three years and are guaranteed by the Indian cricket board. As per the contract, the teams shall have to pay the winning bid to the player yearly. Almost all of the world's top players will take part in the 44-day league in which 59 matches will be played among eight franchises. The tournament is scheduled to begin on April 18, 2008.
