Former Gujarat speaker Dhirubhai Shah dead March 18, 2008
Ahmedabad, March 18: Former Gujarat assembly speaker Dhirubhai Shah died at his residence here Tuesday. He was 56.

Shah, who was elected speaker of the 10th assembly in March 1998, had been in coma for three years after suffering a heart attack in 2005. He died at his residence in Paldi area of Ahmedabad.

He had set a precedent as the youngest speaker in the history of the Gujarat legislative assembly when he was elevated to the post March 19, 1998.

In November 2003, he was appointed chairman of the Gujarat Finance Commission.

On Jan 29, 2005, he suffered a heart attack on his younger daughter's wedding and slipped into coma. He has been in coma since then, showing intermittent signs of recovery and improvement.

Shah was born into a Jain family in Bela village of Gujarat's Kutch district. He was a lawyer by profession.
