In a clash that broke between security forces and protestors in Tibet, two people have lost their lives. With this violence, Tibet is witnessing the largest anti-China protests in 20 years.
The police fired in the air and used tear gas shells to disperse the protestors. According to reports, rioting has broken out on the streets of the capital Lhasa, with hundreds of monks stepping up their agitation. Moreover, in a region where Beijing is known to rule with an iron hand such protests are extremely rare.
The US Embassy in Beijing says its citizens have also heard gunfire. The protests may also put India in a bit of a spot since thousands of Tibetans live in exile here. However, the relationship between India and China has grown strong over the years.
It is reported that a group of young protestors also tried to gather near the Chinese Embassy in Delhi, but were detained well before they could reach.
Meanwhile, the Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama has appealed to China to ''stop using force'' in Tibet.
In a statement he said, “These protests are a manifestation of the deep-rooted resentment of the Tibetan people under the present governance.”
''I therefore appeal to the Chinese leadership to stop using force and address the long-simmering resentment of the Tibetan people through dialogue with the Tibetan people,'' he said.
