Nepal blocks access to Mt Everest March 15, 2008
Nepal has temporarily blocked access to Mount Everest in order to prevent Tibetans from staging a protest at the peak, following a request made by China.

Beijing is concerned that the Tibetan protest may coincide with plans to take the Olympic torch up to the mountain. Although, no exact date has been set for the journey to carry the Olympic torch to Mount Everest, it is likely that the journey could be in late April or early May. Hence, the climbers will be banned from going beyond the Everest's base camp until May 10.

According to the Nepalese Tourism Minister, the step is taken to prevent some people who could infiltrate and cause trouble when they take the torch to the top.

Earlier this week, China restricted access along the northern route to the peak. Last year, five US mountaineers, including an ethnic Tibetan, unfurled banners on Everest calling for Tibetan independence.
