Delhi mulling new law to control commodity prices February 15, 2010
New Delhi, Feb 14 (IANS) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Sunday said the government was "seriously considering" a new legislation to control prices of various essential commodities while strengthening existing laws.

"The Delhi government is awaiting permission from the union government to strengthen the Essential Commodities Act to control hoarders and black-marketers. The government is making all efforts to provide maximum relief and reducing burden on people," Dikshit said, addressing a meeting here.

"Wholesale and retail prices of wheat and flour have shown a sharp increase in the last few months for which the Delhi government has taken a major step to provide flour and pulses at a rate lower than in open market," she said.

The government is already selling a 10-kg bag of wheat flour at Rs.139.

"The weights and measures department of Delhi government has started surprise checking and ensuring the sale of essential commodities in a vigilant manner. Arrival of foodgrain, fruits and vegetables in Delhi are closely monitored and immediate remedial measures are taken in case arrival and availability of these items are noticed unusual," the chief minister added.
