New Delhi, March 21: The capital's all-round rosy picture depicted in the latest economic survey is because of the government's concerted development efforts, says Delhi's Finance and Planning Minister A.K. Walia.

"In the 10-year rule, we have made Delhi shining on all fronts. It is going to be a world class city not only in terms of people's increasing income but also in infrastructure, health and education facilities," Walia said on Friday.

Walia, a key member of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit led Congress government, is busy giving final touches to the annual budget, which he will present in the assembly Monday. The Planning Commission has already approved Rs.100 billion for the Delhi government in the coming fiscal.

The Economic Survey 2006-07 puts Delhi residents' per capita income at Rs.66,728 against the national figure of Rs.29,642 per annum. Every 85 people out 1,000 have cars. The average resident spends Rs.1,244 annually on education and Rs.685 on health, compared to the national figure of respectively Rs.857 and Rs.260.

Walia feels that the things will further improve in days to come, and the people will get adequate healthcare, roads, education and other facilities.

The Congress unseated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 1998 assembly poll, and retained power in the 2003 election on the development plank.

"Delhi is on the move. The government is committed to make the city a role model for others globally. The findings of the economic survey simply reinforce the fact that the national capital is undergoing a sea change on all counts," said Walia.

The survey details, however, have not enthused the main opposition BJP, which termed the performance of the government in the past ten years as "abysmal".

"The details and other statistics in the latest economic survey are not in conformity with the ground realities. The lower middle class people are suffering like anything, while the poor people are finding it difficult to make both ends meet," said Delhi BJP unit chief Harshvardhan.

"The government schools are in bad shape. The hospitals are inadequately equipped to cater to the people's needs effectively. Inflation is skyrocketing. The government is not able to provide power and water to the people," Harshvardhan added.
